Domestic Abuse Counseling

If someone you love has become someone you fear, you are not imagining it, and you are not alone. Reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not a decision you have to explain to anyone. At Best Life Therapists, domestic abuse counseling gives you a private, nonjudgmental place to make sense of what is happening and figure out what you want next, at whatever pace feels safe. There is no rush. You do not have to leave, stay, or report anyone to begin — only talk to someone who will believe you

  1. "Reaching out for help is a sign of strength."

Safety first: support and your next step

Your safety comes before everything else. If you are in immediate danger, call 911. You can ask for an officer trained in domestic violence.

For free, confidential support any hour of the day, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is available 24/7 at 1-800-799-7233, or text START to 88788. Here in Orange County, Laura’s House runs a 24-hour hotline at 866-498-1511 with emergency shelter and advocacy. Save these numbers somewhere your partner cannot see them.

A safety plan is simple and practical. It might be a small bag of essentials with a trusted friend or family member, copies of important documents, a code word for your kids, and a place to go if you need to leave fast. You do not have to build it alone. In counseling, we can work through safety planning together, quietly, without any pressure to act before you are ready. Getting support early keeps your options open. That is the whole point.

Recognizing domestic abuse and coercive control

Abuse is not only bruises. Many people spend years unsure whether what they are living through “counts,” because nothing has ever been thrown or hit. It counts.

Domestic abuse is a pattern of control, and it affects women and men across every income level, faith, and neighborhood. It can look like constant criticism that chips away at who you are, or money kept just out of reach so you cannot leave. It can be jealousy dressed up as love, checking your phone, deciding who you are allowed to see. California law has recognized this kind of coercive control since 2021, because the damage is real even when it leaves no mark

Types of domestic abuse

Domestic abuse shows up in several forms, and they often overlap:

  • Physical abuse — hitting, grabbing, blocking a doorway
  • Emotional and psychological abuse — insults, threats, humiliation, gaslighting
  • Coercive control — isolation, monitoring, controlling daily choices
  • Financial abuse — controlling money, sabotaging your job
  • Sexual abuse — any unwanted or coerced sexual contact
  • Digital abuse and stalking — tracking, harassing, threatening online

If you recognized your own relationship in that list, that recognition is the first step, and it is a brave one.

Leaving is rarely as simple as walking out. Fear, finances, children, and love for the person who is hurting you all pull in different directions, and abuse often moves in cycles, calm one week and frightening the next. Victims of abuse often blame themselves, but staying longer than you wanted is not a failure of yours. It is how abusive relationships work.

How domestic abuse counseling helps you heal

Counseling will not tell you what to do. It helps you find solid ground again.

Trauma has a way of convincing you that the chaos is your fault. Trauma informed counseling gently reverses that. Together we work on rebuilding self-esteem, restoring your sense of control, and quieting the constant hum of anxiety so you can hear your own thoughts. You learn coping strategies for the hard days and practical ways to reduce the isolation that abuse depends on. Many people describe it as remembering who they were before.

For some, this is also relationship counseling in a careful, safety-first form. Healing does not require a particular ending. It requires being heard.

Counseling and therapy services for adults and children

Not every stretch of sadness means something is clinically wrong. Grief after a loss, stress during a divorce, anxiety around a career change — these are painful, but they're a normal part of being human. We never want to pathologize ordinary hardship.

Every situation is different, so our services meet you where you are. We offer in-office sessions across South Orange County and secure teletherapy for when leaving the house is hard or unsafe. Sessions are private, and the pace is yours.

Children feel abuse in the home even when no one raises a hand toward them. A child who has witnessed violence may become anxious, withdrawn, angry, or convinced it was somehow their fault. Age-appropriate therapy helps them name what happened, let go of that guilt, and learn what safe relationships look like again.

Our work also connects naturally to related care many survivors need, from trauma therapy and EMDR to support for PTSD, anxiety and stress, and depression.

Individual, couples, and group counseling

Most people begin with individual counseling, one-on-one, where your safety and your story come first. Group counseling, including a support group for women, can come later and helps in a way solo work cannot, because sitting with others who understand breaks the isolation fast. A word of caution on couples work: when there is active abuse, joint sessions can be unsafe, so we start with your individual safety and never put you in a room where speaking honestly could put you at risk.

Faith-integrated support without pressure to reconcile

Best Life Therapists is a faith-integrated practice, and for many survivors, faith is a source of real strength through this. You do not have to be a Christian to work with us, and nothing here is forced.

If faith matters to you, we will honor it with care. What we will never do is use scripture to pressure you to stay in a dangerous home or to “submit” to harm. Forgiveness, if and when it comes, is yours to give on your timeline, and it never means pretending you were not hurt. Reconciliation is only safe when the person who caused the harm takes real, sustained accountability, not just an apology. Your safety and your healing come first. Always.

Privacy and What Counseling Confidentiality Means

What you share in counseling stays in counseling. California law protects the confidentiality of everything discussed in your sessions, with a few narrow exceptions (imminent danger, suspected child or elder abuse, or a court order). Your counselor will walk you through these boundaries in your first meeting so there are no surprises.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it still domestic abuse if my partner has never hit me?

Yes. Emotional abuse, financial control, and coercive control are all forms of domestic abuse, and California law recognizes coercive control even without physical violence.

Do I have to leave my relationship to start counseling?

No. Counseling helps you feel safe and think clearly at your own pace. Any decision about staying or leaving is yours, and we will not pressure you either way.

Is what I say confidential?

Yes. Sessions are private and confidential, within the standard legal limits your therapist will explain up front.

Can you help my children?

Yes. We work with children who have witnessed domestic violence. Age-appropriate therapy helps them feel safe again and let go of the guilt so many kids quietly carry. Rebuilding trust takes time, and we move at their speed.

Do you offer online sessions?

Yes. Secure teletherapy is available across Orange County for when coming to an office is difficult or unsafe.
